How many wardrobe boxes do you need?

How many wardrobe boxes do you need?

Packing the clothes in your closet for a move can be a big hassle because you have to take them off the hangers, find someplace to pack the hangers, fold up the clothes and pack them, and then put them into the closet of your new home. Since they will probably get wrinkled in the process, you’ll likely need to iron them before you can put them away. And good luck remembering where you packed the iron!

Wardrobe boxes make packing your closet much easier. These boxes have metal bars where you can hang your clothes on hangers. All you need to do is move the clothes directly from the closet to the wardrobe box, and then to the closet of your new home. Basically, a wardrobe box is a portable closet.

To calculate how many wardrobe boxes you will need, you first need to find out the size of the wardrobe boxes you will be using. Most are 24” x 24” by 40”. This makes them about half the size of a standard closet. To determine how much will fit in the wardrobe box, go into your closet and push all the clothes on hangers to one side. If your closet is packed tightly, then you might need 2 wardrobe boxes per closet.

If you have a lot of full-length items hanging in your closet (such as long dresses or overcoats), then these items might bundle up in the bottom of the box. This shouldn’t cause much wrinkling though as there won’t be much pressure on the creases. However, it does mean that you won’t have much room for other items in the bottom or your wardrobe box.

Wardrobe Box Packing Tips:

• You can wrap shoes and other items from your closet and put them in the bottom of the wardrobe box. Remember to pack these items first!

• You can use wardrobe boxes to pack some large, flat items such as framed pictures or mirrors. Your clothes hanging in the wardrobe will act as cushioning for the item and keep it safe. However, you will still want to take precautions so the item doesn’t break. Wrap any glass or breakable items before putting them in the wardrobe box with your clothes. Try to limit large items to one per wardrobe box.

• Don’t let the wardrobe box get too heavy! While they are generally very sturdy, they still shouldn’t be packed too heavily as the bottom can break open. They will also be difficult to carry if they get too heavy.
