9 things to remember on moving day

9 things to remember on moving day

Moving requires a lot of organization and planning. The last thing you will want is to realize you forgot one of these important things on moving day!

1. Have cash on hand

Be sure to hit up an ATM machine before moving day. You will need cash for things like tipping the movers, paying the babysitter, and paying for any food delivery.

2. Is the moving van parked legally?

Depending on where you are moving to and from, you may need to have a parking permit for the moving van. A good moving company will take care of this detail for you – but be sure to ask! If you are moving yourself, do research about what is required. If the moving van has to park on a public street, make sure you reserve the spot well in advance.

3. Tell movers about fragile items

When the movers arrive, point out any items which require special handling. You did remember to mark boxes as fragile, right?

4. Make sure the “priority” box is packed last

A good moving tip is to pack a priority box of items you will need for the last few days in your old place and the first few days in the new place. This priority box needs to be packed last so it can come off the truck first.

5. Have food and drinks

Come up with a food and drink plan for moving day. Otherwise, you are going to have a lot of hungry, thirsty people on hand and nothing to give them (or any cups or plates to give it to them on!).

6. Charge your phone

On moving day, you will need your phone to stay in communication with the movers. You will also probably need it for things like getting GPS directions to the new place and calling for food delivery. Be sure it is charged, and that your charger is packed in with your overnight bag.

7. Directions for the movers

Make sure the movers have exact directions on how to get to your new place. Good movers will ask for this information in advance so they can plan a route and make sure to get any parking or other permits.

8. Take photos if renting

Take photos of your rental before you leave it as evidence of the condition you left it in. Before loading boxes into the new place, you will also want to take detailed photos so your landlord later doesn’t try to pin damages on you.

9. Lock doors and windows, turn off lights

You’d be surprised how many people forget to do this before leaving. Remember to unplug any large appliances which are staying in the old place, such as refrigerators or ovens.
